But that issue was fixed, and now Trails in the Sky and Persona 4 work great on deck, even though Valve still marked them as “Unsupported.” Codecs are used in a wide range of Japanese games. Before Steam Deck was launched, there was a problem with video in the Proton software working Windows games on Deck. These days Steam is filled with ports and remasters of classic JRPGs from Beyond Final Fantasy, from Grandia to Tales of Vesperia to Shin Megami Tensei 3. PC gaming’s relationship with Japan has flourished over the past decade. If you love JRPGs more than any other game, the Vita was the best gaming device ever.Īt least it was until this year.

The Vita made dozens of amazing (and very, very long) games portable for the first time, and its 5-inch OLED screen was so small they still looked great. Without mods, all of Square’s beloved PlayStation RPGs were best played on CRT TVs-or, more simply, as downloadable “PSOne Classics” on Sony’s 2012 Vita. Modern ports of FF7 added flashy features like the ability to move rapidly through random battles, but they also required playing on large HD screens with blurry advanced backgrounds.
